" The Rivers In Nepal "

The flow of water from upper part of the land to the lower part
by digging the earth is known as a river. The Himalayas are
situated on the north border of our country. Snow melts from
the Himalayas. Forming as river full of water, it flows to the
southern terai region. Our country is known to be the second
largest country of the world after Brazil in the field of water
resources.

There are many rivers in our country. Some are very big and
always full of water. Some are of medium size and never run
dry. Some are very small. They are seasonal rivers. They are
full of water in the rainy season but run dry in the summer.
Our country has been divided in fourteen zones. Most of them
are named after the names of the biggest rivers. They are
Mechi, Koshi, Narayani, Bagmati, Gandaki, Rapti, Bheri,
Karnali, Seti and Mahakali. This shows the importance of
rivers in our country.

Rivers are sources of irrigation and hydro-electricity
production. They carry different minerals from hilly areas and
spread in the tarai region to increase the fertility power of the
land for getting good crops. Sometimes people get holy-bath
thinking that the water can wash their sins and some
diseases.

It is a sorrowful matter that people make the rivers dirty by
throwing the garbage of factories. They throw rubbish in the
river. They carry their cattle to the rivers to wash the dirt inside
the river. All dirty drains also flow into rivers. Many pass stool
and urine near the water. The bank is used as a cemetery .

In this way we see that rivers are very much useful if we
protect them from being dirty. They can supply us with some
valuables like gold. If we manage the rivers in a nice way,
they can attract tourists, too. But if we use them as dumping
sites, they can lose their natural look and the pollution can
foment trouble in us.
