" Democracy in Nepal "

" Democracy in Nepal "

Democracy means the rules of subjects over themselves. The former president of the USA, Abraham Lincon said, “Democracy is the government of the people for the people and by the people. The oldest democracy which was established in 1776 is in the U.S.A. There are two types of it: direct and indirect. Only one example of direct democracy is found in Switzerland. Indirect democracy is divided into two parts. They are presidential democracy and parliamentary democracy.

Democracy is that system of governing people in which the head of the government is chosen from an electoral-collage or the elected members of the parliament who are themselves elected on the basis of adult franchise. The head of the government goes through the constitutional power without violating the constitutional rights of people. There is a powerful supreme court which guards the violation of constitution.

It is a good system of government. But it has some demerits, too. An elected government takes a decision of development but its tenure finishes and the other opposite party government does not implement it. There is the value of majority in it. Our society is full of ignorant people. So an ignorant person can also be chosen as the head of the government that can disturb our system.

As far as our country is concerned a multiparty democracy under constitutional monarchy was established in the constitution of 2047. The interim prime minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai was replaced by the elected prime-minister Mr. G.P Koirala. He was followed by Manmohan Adhikari, Sher Bahadur Deuba and others in a very short duration, due to the conflicts between leaders and parties. Later democracy was finished off by king Gyanendra. It was re-established in 2063. A Constituent Assembly has been formed to make a new republic constitution. Different political parties have distinct opinions. Some want presidential system but some like multiparty parliamentary democracy. „ In spite of its demerits it is a well-organized system. We should flourish it. But we are in a dilemma for further system of government. Let's observe which way the wind blows.
